Travel To Solar Eclipses

Solar Eclipses in 2006: March 29th (total) and September 22nd (annular)

What is a solar eclipse?

In general terms, a solar eclipse occurs as a consequence of a combination of the earthís orbit around the sun, and the moonís orbit around the earth. When the sun, moon, and earth line up, the moon casts a shadow towards the earth and the sunís light is partially or totally blocked out in what is known as a partial, annular or total solar eclipse. This can only happen at the time of a new moon. However, an eclipse does not occur every month because the orbit of the moon around the earth is not always perfectly aligned with respect to the sun. But when this condition is met, an eclipse occurs. A total solar eclipse is even less frequent (on average, once every 16 months), and this occurs when the eclipse results in the moon casting a shadow onto the surface of the earth. Total eclipses are spectacular natural events.
